As winter approaches and the holiday season draws near, we also anticipate the arrival of wetter and colder weather. While the refreshing rain is a welcome relief from the dry heat, it's crucial to remain cautious. The scent of fresh rain and the chill in the air can potentially trigger asthma attacks by constricting the airways.
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that impacts millions of individuals globally. Cold weather can exacerbate asthma symptoms, making it challenging for those with asthma to breathe comfortably. To help you prevent asthma attacks during colder months, consider the following tips:
🍂 Cover your nose and mouth with a scarf or mask: This helps warm the air you breathe, reducing the risk of asthma attacks.
🍂 Avoid outdoor exercise: Physical activity can trigger asthma symptoms, particularly in cold weather. If outdoor exercise is necessary, warm up for at least 10 to 15 minutes beforehand and use your inhaler 15 to 30 minutes before exercising.
🍂 Adhere to your prescribed asthma medication regimen: Consistently taking your medication can help manage your asthma and lower the risk of attacks.
🍂 Stay well-hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids keeps your airways moist and reduces the likelihood of asthma attacks.
🍂 Celebrate Thanksgiving with care: The holiday season brings family gatherings and feasts, but be cautious if you have asthma. Be mindful of potential triggers like smoke, strong scents, or allergens at Thanksgiving gatherings.
Stay warm and safe this fall season! 🦃🍁🎁

Mission
The Houston Health Department (HHD) has a mission to work in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. The health department has a long history of positioning asthma control as a priority. Based on a Community Health Assessment facilitated by the HHD, specific asthma improvement objectives were featured in a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) that was adopted and is currently being implemented over a five-year period.

Partnership with Houston Public Library
We are thrilled to share that we are in the process of launching a collaboration aimed at hosting community events at several library branches. Our goal is to enhance community engagement with Asthma Control and Prevention strategies. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting initiative that will bring our community closer to healthier living.
-->
Coalition Development
Over the past four weeks, the Houston Health Department has been actively engaged in fostering connections with various healthcare providers, universities, pharmaceutical companies, and key stakeholders. The objective is to build a coalition dedicated to addressing asthma-related issues and improving community awareness of available asthma resources. Notably, the department has been in communication with Zeba Bhanji, Head of the BREATHE Project at the University of Houston, among others, to strengthen this collaborative effort. Together, we aim to enhance the well-being of the Houston community by providing valuable asthma-related information and support.

“Happiness lies first of all in health.”
–George William Curtis
Asthma Prevention and Control Program is a Houston Health Department (HHD) program. The department works in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. HHD is a full-service health department that not only performs all core functions of a Public Health Department but also many enhanced functions including initiatives to address health inequities. HHD services benefit all Houston residents but the department also takes additional steps to support those most in need, such as low-income mothers and children, the elderly, and minority populations. Most HHD functions serve the 2.3 million residents of the City of Houston but the scope and impact extend into Harris County’s population of 4.7 million people through the department’s Area Aging on Aging, Bureau of Youth and Adolescent Health, Project Saving Smiles, See to Succeed, immunization strategies, syndromic surveillance and HIV-STD surveillance. HHD’s laboratory also services a 17-county region. Learn more at
