HOUSTON -The Houston Health Department will distribute 400 free portable air conditioners to area seniors, people with disabilities and caregivers of disabled children.

People in Houston and Harris County can apply for an air conditioner unit starting Friday, May 17. They can apply by calling the Harris County Area Agency on Aging, a division of the department, at 832-393-4301.

Recipients will receive information and assistance with the installation of the units. Only people who have never received an air conditioner unit through the department are eligible to apply.  

People 60 and older are considered seniors and eligible to apply.
