Health Education in Action
Recently, the Houston Health Department’s Mobile Vaccination Unit and Health Education team joined Zelma Street Mission Back-To-School Healing Arts to provide COVID-19 vaccinations at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Many families attended the event, and almost 20 people were vaccinated. Seven received their very first dose! Nomi Health provided health screenings and school supplies to students and their families.

The Houston Health Department is implanting health equity as the standard for the Department (embedding health equity as a core value across the Department). The Prevention Institute and the National Institute for Race and Ethnicity have created high-level training courses on health disparities, implicit bias, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.). These concepts will become the building blocks of every action, decision, and service the department provides. Intentional monitoring of policy and procedures to enhance structural, procedural, and distributional justice in our environment will be applied.

The Prevention Institute's mission is to construct health equity as a foundation of key policies and actions at the federal, state, local, and organizational levels. The Houston Health Department is proud to partner with the Prevention Institute as they deepen their experience and knowledge of these topics impacting the work we do and the communities we serve. The National Training Institute on Race and Equity
The National Training Institute on Race & Equity (NTIRE) at Morehouse College is a social-impact and educational entity. They assist individuals and organizations with identifying, understanding, and managing the content, skills, and behavior needed to create diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations and communities. The Houston Health Department partners with the National Training Institute on Race & Equity to build respect and inclusion so we can better relate to each other and the communities we serve. To address emerging health disparities across underserved communities in Houston, the UTHealth School of Public Health has been awarded a $1.1 million grant from the Houston City Council. The project’s goal is to advance equity, elevate the roles of Community Health Workers (CHWs), and create new workforce development opportunities for CHWs, through the efforts of the Health Equity Collective (HEC).
