Medicare beneficiaries reviewing their 2020 health and prescription drug plan options can get free help from benefits counselors with the Harris County Area Agency on Aging (AAA), a division of the Houston Health Department.
A weeklong awareness effort to curb the growing misuse and addiction to prescription pain medication in the region, where deaths in Harris County associated with opioid overdose are up 135% since 2013, was announced today at Houston City Hall by officials of the Houston Health Department, area municipalities and the University of Houston at Sugar Land in partnership with HCA Houston Healthcare.
The Houston Health Department is working to address the opioid crisis before it becomes an epidemic in the city. Two recent grants, the first of their kind awarded to the health department, focus on reducing overdose deaths, referring people to treatment, providing education and improving data collection.
The Gulf Coast Health Insurance Marketplace Collaborative and Williams will honor 10 area agencies and their representatives for their outreach efforts and enrollment initiatives to help uninsured residents sign up for one of the more than 40 health insurance plans available in the Gulf Coast region. ACA navigators, assisters and outreach staff will also receive recognition for their work.
Updated: HDHHS extends multi-service center business hours for ACA deadline
The Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) will open four of its multi-service centers on Sunday and extend the business hours late into the night at six centers Monday, giving uninsured people a last chance to enroll in a health plan before the Affordable Care Act’s deadline.
