Diabetes Alert Day — March 28, 2023

Diabetes Alert Day® is a one-day "wake up call" that focuses on the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of understanding your risk.

  • Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S.
  • Diabetes is a major cause of blindness.
  • Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90-95% of diabetes cases.
  • Type 1 diabetes is common in young people.
  • Type 2 diabetes is preventable.

Take Action

The DAWN Center provides free diabetes self-management education and many other health related services to Houstonians in order to reduce and prevent chronic disease.

    After you complete this presentation, you will:

    • Know what diabetes is
    • Understand how insulin works to lower blood sugar
    • Identify the risk factors for becoming diabetic
    • Be able to explain how to treat high and low blood sugar
    • Recognize the role that the seven self-care behaviors plan in managing diabetes

    Diabetes Self-Management

    Starting Feb. 9, in-person and online classes each Thursday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. All locations.

    Learn how to better manage diabetes with a full mind, body and spirit approach. This 7-week class includes:

    • Preventing low blood sugar
    • Meal planning
    • Stress management
    • Introduction to physical activity and exercise

    Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

    Starting Jan. 17, in-person and online classes each Tuesday from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. All locations.

    With these classes, you get:

    • A proven program to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes
    • A CDC- approved curriculum and trained lifestyle coach
    • Participant guides, fitness logs, food logs, weight log, action plan journal and other materials
    • Support from others like you as you learn new skills

    Peer Support Group

    The peer support group meets in person each Tuesday from 11 a.m. at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center.
