Services Provided
Services are available on a referral basis for certain high-risk groups, including TB cases, contacts, immigrants, refugees, and the homeless.
Services include:
- Chest X-Ray
- Medical evaluation and follow-up for TB infection and disease
- TB treatment
What to Bring to Your First Visit
- Photo identification
- Any paperwork given to you by the referring agency
- List of current medications
Fees are assessed on a sliding scale based upon the federal poverty level.
TB Program Services
- Case registry staff receive reports of suspected and confirmed TB cases from private physicians, hospitals, and correctional facilities. They maintain the TB database and compile surveillance data provided to the Texas Department of State Health Services and the CDC.
- Nurse case management provides coordination of care between patients and their providers. They are available for consultation based on CDC recommendations and provide education to community partners and other individuals as requested.
- Field staff provide directly observed therapy (DOT) to suspected and confirmed TB cases and high-risk contacts. DOT helps patients successfully complete TB treatment and can reduce the development of drug resistance, treatment failure, or relapse after the end of treatment. Field staff also provides on-site contact investigation to identify, test, and treat individuals exposed to tuberculosis.
Ancilliary Services
The City of Houston laboratory performs bacteriological studies for tuberculosis, including: smears, cultures, mycobacterial identifications, NAAT, and first-line drug sensitivities.- The City of Houston pharmacy provides packaged medication for the treatment of tuberculosis.
